Euro-2012

Tournament history

The UEFA European Football Championship is held every four years since 1960. At first the main football competition of the men's national football teams governed by UEFA was called the UEFA European Nations Cup. Since 1968 the most popular continental championship bears its present name.

Prior to 1976 only 4 teams participated in the final part of the Championship, in 1980 their amount increased to 8, and since 1996 – 16 national try to get the honored rank of the best soccer team of the Old World.

On the initial stage the national teams which participate in the final part of the tournament are playing for this right in home and away games, and since 1968 the games are held in qualifying groups and matches of play-off series.

The Henri Delaunay Trophy, which is awarded to the winner of the European Football Championship, is named in honor of Henri Delaunay, initiator and organizer of tournament, at that point General Secretary of UEFA.

The national team of the USSR was the first winner of the European Championship, beating national team of Yugoslavia 2:1 in a final match on “Parc des Princes” stadium  (Paris) on July 10. Viktor Ponedelnik, center-forward of USSR National Team, scored the decisive goal on the 113th minute of the match. In 1988 the national team of Soviet Union, the skeleton of which was based on the players of Kyiv "Dynamo" and Dnipropetrovsk "Dnipro" headed by glorified coach Valerii Lobanovskyi, won the silver medals, yielding to the Dutch team in a final duel.

National team of Germany became the Champion of Europe the highest number of times: the players of this team brought the honored European soccer trophy home thrice (in 1972, 1980 and 1996).

The best goal-scorer of the championships of Europe is Michel Platini, who scored 9 goals on the tournament in 1984.

The national team of Ukraine never participated in European Football Championship yet. However, on the meeting of UEFA executive Committee in Cardiff (Wales) on April 18, 2007, the honored right to host the European Football Championship 2012 was given to Ukraine and Poland. So our footballers have a chance to show themselves on the championship and to confirm high sporting reputation of the predecessors on this occasion. The state has to make efforts, to hold the championship on a due level. The final match of the championship will be held on "Olimpiyskyi" stadium in Kyiv, the fact which is especially pleasant.
