Andriivskyi uzviz (descent)

  • Historical street runs from Kontraktova square (Ploshcha) to Volodymyrska and Desiatynna streets.

    In ancient times it was the shortest route, which connected the craft Podil with Upper city, where princes lived. This street is for our city like Montmartre for Paris: painters, potters, carvers and craftsmen expose their products for sale here constantly; in addition, there are many establishments, which will leave the unique memories in the heart of the visitors. Names of famous workers of culture of the past, including: M. Bulhakov, I. Kavaleridze and others are associated with the street.

    The main construction of the street was made at the turn of XIX - XX centuries. At The most tender of Kiev beauties - St. Andrew's Church, which was built under the project of great architect Rastrelli in 1753 at the request of Empress Elizabeth, is licated on the top of descent. Legends associate this place with the establishment of the cross and the prediction of occurrence of the great Christian city by the Apostle St. Andrew. In the XIII century there was the Khrestovozdvyzhenska church. Current one-dome temple has the form of direct cross, in the corners of which there are exquisite towers. It is pleasant to enjoy its architecture both close, and from distant panoramas. The museums, theaters, art studios, art galleries, souvenir shops are down the street.

    Descent got its name, probably after St. Andrew's Church in the XVIII century However in 1920 the street was renamed to H. Liver street. In 1944 it was decided to return its historical name to the street.

    Andriivskyi uzviz, which is often named "the most Kyiv street of all Kyiv streets", is favorite place for citizens and visitors of the city. It is believed that genetic memory of ancient Kyiv remained there. Filmmakers like this street: the slopes of Montmartre of Kyiv are often used while shooting movies about historic past.
