Bessarabska square

  • The square is located between Khreshchatyk, Taras Shevchenko boulevard, Velyka Vasylkivska street, Krutyi uzviz (descent) and Baseina street.

In the end XVIII century an equestrian post-house appeared in place of old Lutheran cemetery. The travellers arrived there from the south, from the side of Vasylkiv. The lively auctions took place round the station and elemental trade area appeared here at the beginning ХІХ century. Peasants from Bessarabia arrived here to sell fruit and wine, this fact explains the name of the square. In the middle of ХІХ century the square was well-organized and it became one of the central districts. In second third of ХІХ century coaching inns, circus performances for population and other public events took place here. All of these gave greater popularity to the square

Bessarabskyi covered market became the central building of the square. It was built in 1910-1912 in style of Ukrainian modern under the project of architect of H.Hay on money bequeathed by L. Brodskyi, businessman-millionaire, to the city. After destructions in the Second world war-time, the renovation of Bessarabska began. Today the building of the market has almost its primordial appearance: the sculptured finishing on agricultural theme and other elements of decor on the facade of building attract the attention and make this building really unique.

In the agriculture middle of ХІХ to the century there was one ore name of the square – Universytetska (as it ran from the district of Lypky to the university). It was planned to set a monument to Bohdan Khmelnytskyi on the street in 1869, so it got the name of the great Ukrainian hetman for some time.

Bessarabska square and adjoining streets were reconstructed few years ago. An underground entertaining shopping complex "Metrograd" was placed under them. It is also possible, that the square will be changed again soon: the plans of architects include design of different levels highways on Bessarabska square.

Modern Bessarabska square is one of the most known squares of Kyiv, as exactly solemn events and festive concerts are often held here.
